Important Things to Know about Facial Cleanser

  • No matter what type of skin you have—whether it’s dry, oily, combination, or sensitive—cleanser is a skincare staple in any routine. A gentle facial cleanser and body cleanser are must-haves for all skin types when you’re looking to maintain fresh, healthy-looking skin. Face and body washes help thoroughly cleanse your skin of dirt, excess oil, and dead skin cells, and set the stage for the rest of your skincare regimen.
  • Whereas facial cleansers are formulated with the delicate skin on your face in mind, body cleansers are designed to support the skin on your body (which can affect the concentration of active ingredients used, for example). Always read the label carefully to discover if your cleanser has been formulated for use on your face, body, or in some cases, is suitable for both.
  • “Double cleansing” refers to a facial cleansing method where you wash your face twice in a row, using two different cleansers. This is most often done by using an oil-based cleanser first, followed by a water-soluble cleanser that’s best-suited for your skin type (cream, gel, or lotion). “Double cleansing” can be useful for some skin types (such as oily skin) but its benefits will vary depending on your skin’s needs.
  • The ideal body wash or facial cleanser should help thoroughly cleanse, without over-stripping your skin or leaving it feeling tight and dry. To use your daily face or body cleanser, begin by wetting your skin with lukewarm water and massaging the cleanser gently onto your skin in a circular motion. Next, rinse, pat dry, and continue with the rest of your body care or facial skincare routine.
  • To help support the delicate skin on your face, it’s especially important to look for gentle, non-comedogenic cleansers that won’t clog your pores, as well as fragrance-free products with beneficial ingredients. For example, whereas foaming cleansers are generally recommended for oily skin types, a cream-based formula can be a great option for dry skin. Or, if you have rough and bumpy skin, you may benefit from choosing a facial cleanser with salicylic acid to help gently cleanse and exfoliate your skin.
  • A gentle cleanser is the first step in any skincare routine. To reap the full benefits of your facial cleanser or body wash, use them daily—in the morning or at night, or as directed by a dermatologist. After cleansing, continue with the rest of your regimen and finish by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen in the morning. When in doubt, consult with your dermatologist for the best personalized advice on choosing a cleanser for your skin’s needs.
