Learn more about the dos and don’ts of creating a healthy skincare regimen for tweens and teens:

Skincare Regimen: DOs

Having a skincare regimen can be a key piece to overall daily hygiene. With the right plan, you can help teens or tweens maintain healthy-looking skin and address any potential issues like acne, dry, or oily skin.

  • Cleanse with a mild cleanser that won't strip the skin of its natural oils and that doesn’t leave the skin feeling tight and dry.
Moisturize with a fragrance-free cream or lotion that contains gentle ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide.
Protect with sunscreens that contain sun protection factor (SPF) to help prevent damage from harmful UV rays.

  • Look for ingredients like skin-identical ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide, which are gentle and can help soothe the skin.

  • A dermatologist can provide tailored advice for your teen’s unique skin needs, helping to prevent issues and introducing products safely to avoid irritation.

PRODUCTS TO CONSIDER USING*
Remember to keep things simple and consider using products such as:

Skincare Regimen: DON’Ts

Pay close attention to ingredients so you can help your teen shop for products that are appropriate for their skin.

  • Too many products can overwhelm the skin. Stick to a simple routine with gentle products.

  • Look for fragrance-free skincare to help avoid irritation.

  • Steer clear of products with retinol, acids, or harsh exfoliants unless directed by a
medical professional. These can damage the skin barrier.

PRODUCTS TO CONSIDER AVOIDING for those under 18

Avoid anti-aging ingredients that may contain retinol/retinoids/peptides/comedogenic properties that may clog pores.

Taking Action Against Acne

Managing acne can be daunting for teens, tweens, and caregivers. Acne affects more than 650 million adolescents and adults worldwide.1 With the right skincare routine and some patience, achieving clearer skin is possible. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when treating acne:

EASY DOES IT

Use acne treatments as needed. It can be tempting to over-apply acne treatments, but overuse can dry out the skin and cause irritation.

HANDS OFF

Avoid scratching, picking, or popping pimples or insect bites. This can spread oils and bacteria, leading to more breakouts. Picking at acne can also cause skin injury, swelling, or scarring.

BE MINDFUL

Acne has many potential triggers, such as hormones, stress, and diet. Be mindful and try to take time for self-care when you can.
